Christmas Party - CANCELLED

Around Louisville

I regret to inform everyone that the 2011 Holiday Party has been cancelled. No alternate date has been set.

Brothers and Sisters:

I would like to extend a heartfelt apology to each and every one of you for canceling the Xmas party this year.  In the last few years we have planned  the event with another local and had planned to do so again this year.  However,  miscommunication  has made it impossible to hold the joint event, nor do we have adequate time to plan another  event in a timely manner.

Please know that we do plan to have another event early next year.   If you have any suggestions on the type of event you’d like to see held, please let us know.

Again, I am deeply apologetic.

Sincerely,

Anissa Brady

E-Mail, please?

General News

It's easy to send us your email address, just drop us a quick message here.

Friends,

As we look to solidify our place in Louisville, it's becoming more and more important that we can contact each of our members efficiently. We've tried our best to keep email from the Local off of the city's computer network, but we really need your help!

Please sign up for an account with us, or at least get your email address to us so that we can get notices out to you as quickly as possible. If you have any questions, please contact your steward or E-Board representative.

The Fall of Wisconsin

What happened in Wisconsin tonight

By Ezra Klein

Here’s what just happened in Wisconsin: the rules of the state’s Senate require a quorum for any measures that spend money. That’s how the absence of the Senate’s Democrats could stymie Gov. Scott Walker’s proposed budget law -- it spent money, and thus it needed a quorum.

But in a surprise move earlier today, Wisconsin’s Senate Republicans rewrote the bill and left out all the parts that spent money. Then they quickly convened and passed the new law, which included the provisions stripping most public-employee unions of their collective bargaining rights but excluding everything in the law that spent money.

What happens next? Expect the protests over the next few days to be ferocious. But unless a judge rules the move illegal -- and I don’t know how to judge the likelihood of that -- Walker’s proposed law will go forward. The question is whether Walker and the Republicans who voted for it will do the same.

Polls in Wisconsin clearly showed that Republicans had failed to persuade the public of their cause. Walker’s numbers dropped, while Democrats and unions found themselves suddenly flush with volunteers, money, and favorable media coverage. And they plan to take advantage of it: Eight Wisconsin Republicans have served for long enough to be vulnerable to a recall election next year, and Democrats have already begun gathering signatures. Now their efforts will accelerate. “We now put our total focus on recalling the eligible Republican senators who voted for this heinous bill,” said Mike Tate, Chairman of the Wisconsin Democratic Party. “And we also begin counting the days remaining before Scott Walker is himself eligible for recall.”

E-Mail integrated into website [BETA]

Upcoming Events

Look! E-Mail has been integrated into our website!

Check it out folks! After some hops, skips and jumps, I have been able to integrate email into your AFSCME Local 2629 website experience. So I present the webmail experience to you with some understandings and info about how you can begin to use it.

First, the login to the E-Mail site is located at the top of the page just under the logo. Click on that and then enter your full email address (i.e. john.doe@afscme2629.com) into window along with your password and you're in. It may take a few seconds to load depending on traffic.

NOTE: You only have an AFSCME email account if you are a steward, E-Board representative or table officer. Your hotmail, yahoo, gmail and Metro email accounts will not work from here.

Now, I really consider this feature of the website to be in [BETA] as it has just been set up for a few hours, and I think there is still work to do. THERE WILL BE ERRORS, and you can ignore them. But the process of reading and sending email should work. The errors that I have seen so far do not impact working with the system in any way. In the near future, I plan to work on the formatting and theming of each aspect of the site so that I can integrate them as tightly as possible. I know that this will be an important part of communications between members.

BUT I DON'T HAVE AN AFSCME E-MAIL ACCOUNT: That's ok. Did you know that you can email anyone in our system? Since the beginning, we have had private messaging. All you need to do is go to USER MENU > MESSAGE CENTER in the navigation menu and you can email anyone in the system. What actually happens is our system sends an email to the recipients private (home) email account and tells them they have a message. This allows us to email each other but keeps our home addresses private. Giving out your email address is up to you, not us. But we can still facilitate your correspondence, even if you had that person's mail address and you misplaced it. UPDATE: If you do not have an AFSCME Local 2629 E-Mail account, you probably won't see the link to the email page at the top of the screen.

IF YOU NEED TO CONTACT A STEWARD: We have provided several ways to do that. Our email addresses are always going to be "firstname.lastname@afscme2629.com" So, if your stewards name is John Smith, then his email will be "john.smith@afscme2629.com"

You can also submit a ticket to the GTS to report an issue with the website, email system or a grievance. Those submissions are routed to the correct people and we will be sure to take care of them as quickly as possible.

The Great Divergence and the Decline of Labor

Around Louisville

Just wanted to pass on a series that has been appearing in Slate for the past week or so about the increase in income inequality in the United States.  While I recommend reading the whole series (although I admit I'm only about half way through) the article I'm linking to specifically discusses how the decline of Labor Unions has affected the increase in income inequality.  http://www.slate.com/id/2266025/entry/2266031/
